350.org

eARTh ’10

1. overview

Famed aerial artist John Quigley conceived of an enormous public art project — The Solar Eagle — to represent LA in 350.org’s eARTh campaign. We “artivists” helped John realize his vision, arranging hundreds of huge vinyl sheets and recycled copper strips into the outline of the Eagle. When the image was created, the hundred of us all laid down on the outline of sheeting so our bodies became part of the art.

Meanwhile, the project was very choreographed to the minute through 350 with eight other eARTh projects worldwide such that our project was assembled and visible precisely as an orbiting satellite had a clean shot at photographing the image from space.

I rallied our elementary school’s Green Committee, students, and family community to be part of Quigley’s Eagle and 350’s annual event. As a bonus “teachable moment” I mapped out a kid-friendly bike + metro route to get us downtown without our car.
